Things to do in Shepherdstown
Hi – Janet here from Shepherstown Mystery Walks here. So, you are going to fill your evening with a Shepherdstown Mystery Walks Ghost/History tour…but what are you going to do during the day? Here are a couple things our wonderful town is absolutely famous for.
Birding!
No, these are NOT bats! They are Chimney Swifts, and they have taken up residence in Shepherdstown. In fact, Shepherdstown currently hosts the largest chimney swift roost in West Virginia, right here at Shepherd University. At dusk, hundreds gather overhead in large flocks, the chatter rising in volume as their numbers grow, circling around and around over the roost site.
According to the Experience Shepherdstown website, Birding is a year-round activity, and Shepherdstown offers a wonderful opportunity for it – perfectly placed among migratory routes, and spilling over with wildlife. With multiple viewing sites, both popular and waiting to be discovered, Shepherdstown stands as a bird lover’s must-do destination. The Potomac Valley Audubon Society offers local birding trips led by expert guides (https://www.potomacaudubon.org/ ).
In fact, during a Shepherdstown Mystery Walks tour, you will see numerous Chimney Swifts flying overhead just at dusk. They dance and fly and sing and are just a joy to watch!
